1) Biennal Flight Review - Description and prices :

For an FAA licence (PPL, CPL, ATPL) to remain valid, the FAA regulations states that a flight review should be completed every 24 calendar months. Commonly called "Biennal Flight Review" or "BFR", this renewal is governed by the regulation "14 CFR § 61.56" and  appears in the logbook in the form of an endorsement delivered by the certified flight instructor who completed the BFR.

A BFR is valid for 24 calendar months. It should be noted that a BFR endorsement cannot be negative, this mean that a BFR cannot be failed. However, if a pilot doesn't meet the standards, the instructor will recommend theoretical and/or practical training in order to be able to reach the standards and safety.

The BFR consist in a minimum of:

  • One hour of ground instruction with an instructor;
  • One hour of flight with a flight instructor.

The minimum subjects are:

  • On the ground: Visual flight rules "FAR part 91";
  • In flight: At the discretion of the flight instructor, all procedures and maneuvers that permit the pilot to demonstrate his ability to excercice his licence privileges.

As this is only a bare minimum, it is more realistic to expect all or parts of what the FAA recommend for a BFR, ie: the subjects within the "Practical Test Standard" or "PTS" for the US PPL licence. Here is a copy of the PTS below:

The "BFR" pack include:

  • The flight instruction (1h);
  • The ground instruction (1h);
  • Briefing and débriefing.

Cost for BFR done in a single engine airplane : 200€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

Cost for BFR done in a multi engine airplane : 250€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

If the instructor deems necessary to further the BFR to reach the standards or if a specific training is required, the price beyond the first hour of flight is 90VAT included per additional instruction flight hour .

2) Instrument Proficiency Check - Description and prices:

The regulation states that in order for an instrument rating to be valid, thus flying in IFR/IMC, that 6 approaches, intercepting and tracking of a radio-navigation facility and holding must be completed within 6 months preceding the flight. If within the last 6 months the minimum required has not been accomplished, you have either the choice to complete a rating renewal called "Instrument Proficiency Check" (or IPC) or either another 6 months to comply with the 6 approaches/intercepting/tracking/holding but only in VFR/VMC under the hood and with a safety pilot onboard. In the case you are not able to complete the requirement after the second 6 months you must complete an IPC. This renewal is governed by the regulation "14 CFR § 61.57(d)" and  appears in the logbook in the form of an endorsement delivered by the certified flight instructor who completed the IPC.

An IPC doesn't have a validity as its purpose is to get the pilot current to fly IFR/IMC again, then it is its responsability to maintain his IR rating current every 6 months or to get another renewal. It should be noted that a BFR endorsement cannot be negative, this mean that a BFR cannot be failed. However, if a pilot doesn't meet the standards, the instructor will recommend theoretical and/or practical training in order to be able to reach the standards and safety.

The regulation does not stipulate a minimum time requirement for the IPC, however it state that an IPC must include "a representative number of tasks required by the instrument rating practical test". Here is a copy of the PTS below:

The "IPC" pack include:

  • The flight instruction (1h30);
  • The ground instruction (1h);
  • Briefing and débriefing.

Cost for IPC done in a single engine airplane : 250€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

Cost for IPC done in a multi engine airplane : 300€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

If the instructor deems necessary to further the IPC to reach the standards or if a specific training is required, the price beyond the first hour and half of flight is 90VAT included per additional instruction flight hour .

3) BFR + IPC Package - Description and prices:

The BFR + IPC renewal can be done in 1 flight or 2 flights and include all requirements by the regulations "14 CFR § 61.56" and "14 CFR § 61.57(d)" as described above.

The BFR + IPC pack  include:

  • The flight instruction (2h30);
  • The ground instruction (2h);
  • Briefing and débriefing.

Cost for BFR+IPC done in a single engine airplane : 400€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

Cost for BFR+IPC done in a multi engine airplane : 450€ VAT included (aircraft rental excluded)

If the instructor deems necessary to further the BFR and/or the IPC to reach the standards or if a specific training is required, the price beyond the first two hours and half of flight is 90VAT included per additional instruction flight hour .
